Team History

It was a dream of a few Maltese rugby veterans to create a new rugby club on the Maltese islands, one with truly Maltese roots. The idea kick started back in February 2004 when the Malta u-18 and Malta A squads where touring at L'Aquila. At the end of that season some U-18 players got Sharks RFC alive with the help of some senior players. Pierre Azzopardi gave the support needed to Nicholas Vella to start this amiable project, while Stoff Diamantino gave Sharks the first taste of rugby. Later on that year Carmelo Longo took on the team and guided Sharks for the next two seasons.

July 2004: Sharks R.F.C was established.

The first year was a difficult one, as most players were new and many dropped out after a few hard hits. Besides this the new committee also faced other problems. Albeit this, Sharks managed to scrape a 5th place in a 6 team league and took their deserved rest from rugby, while the committee were still working for some new surprises.

During the 2005/2006 season Sharks Ladies were established to expand the Sharks family and make their presence in other waters. At the time it was the second ladies team on the islands....and they concluded the first Maltese league in 2nd place from 3 teams. During that year Sharks affiliated themselves to Hibernians Sports Association. This was the first of it's kind for a Maltese rugby club, and for that year good news did not stop there, when later Sharks signed a three year deal with sponsor Strongbow and Shark Ladies snatched another sponsorship deal with Saddles Pub. During this year all Sharks showed great improvement, but this was the start.

At the start of the season 2006/2007 John Moreno took over the reigns of coach from Carmelo Longo, whereas Mr. Longo will continue his commitments with Sharks Ladies. During the same season Sharks got a deal to be coached by Youth Developer Officer Sam Ramage, who is the second ever coach in Malta who is being paid, with John Moreno assisting him. The sacrificies along with the commitment showed by the Sharks finally payed off to reach the season's target of winning a game. This happend on the 3rd of February 2007, against Alligators RFC, where Sharks won a deserved victory 17-10 finishing 4th in the Cup tournament.

However having won just a single game didn't get to the Sharks head and decided that they wanted to get another bite at glory. Yet again, against Alligators RFC, Sharks won again on th 17th of March 2007, this time in the League tournament, ending the season in a great 5-31 victory.

All Sharks are very proud of this achievement which was deserved for great commitment and sticking through hard times. Well Done !!
